Understanding the Holy Trinity

Understanding the Holy Trinity

Do you have a hard time comprehending the Holy Trinity?  How can Jesus be God in the flesh if He is God’s Son?  What exactly is the Holy Spirit, where does it come from and how do I receive it?

Here is how I like to explain the Holy Trinity:  Water comes in three-forms:  liquid, solid (ice), and vapor.   They are all water but have different purposes.  The Holy Trinity is sort of like that.  All three parts of the Holy Trinity are God.  But God takes different forms in order to accomplish different purposes. You have God the Father who is in Heaven.  You have Jesus Christ who was God in the flesh, born as a son to the Virgin Mary.  He came as fully man and fully God to die for our sins as a final blood sacrifice.  Then, you have the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God who comes to live in every genuine believer at the moment of their salvation.  The Holy Spirit now controls the believer rather than the sinful nature. The Holy Spirit is the spirit of God living in you.  This Spirit guides you, warns you, comforts you, and teaches you.

All three parts of the Holy Trinity were present at creation.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” Genesis 1:1-2

(God and the Holy Spirit were present at creation)

“In the beginning was the Word (the Holy Word of God, the Holy Bible before it went to print!) , and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning.” John 1: 1-2

“The Word became flesh (Jesus) and made his dwelling among us.” John 1:14

Jesus was with God and was God in the beginning at creation. Jesus was the Word that became flesh and came to live among men to be crucified for humankind’s sin.

I hope this makes sense.  There is a point I want to make. The Word of God is the Holy Bible.  It was already planned for publication before the creation of the world.  It is never outdated and always relevant.  It is God’s way of communicating with humankind.  If you will open your heart to doing a quality Bible study, then you will experience the Lord speaking to you.

God, the Word (who became Jesus Christ), and the Spirit of God were all present at creation.

So, there you have it!  The Holy Trinity is three parts:  God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.  All God but all three have a different purpose!  I hope this helps!  You can learn more about the Holy Trinity in lesson 1 of my Bible study titled In the Beginning: Genesis 1-11 by Janice Bobanis!

I would love to hear your comments! How have you experienced the Holy Spirit in your life?

Blessings,

Janice Bobanis
